Charles Melvin Obituary

Charles Eugene Melvin passed away quietly at his home in Sanford, Florida, October 18, 2020. He was 85 years old.

He lived a full and interesting life. The four things he was most proud of were his three children  and the fact he worked on the Apollo program that put a man on the moon.

He was born in Cincinnati, March 24, 1935 , the oldest of five children and the only boy. He lived on the family farm in Hamersville, Brown County, Ohio, until he went to the University of Cincinnati. Only one fourth of the students in his class graduated, he was one and that was another thing he was proud of.

He worked his whole career as an Aerospace Engineer, employed by several aerospace companies. He lived all over the United States. Each of his children was born in a different state.

He was always active. He played basketball in high school, helping his team to the State finals. He played volleyball and rode horses. He liked to run and jog. He found interesting places to walk: on the beach at New Smyrna and on the bike trail at Big Tree Park in Longwood. He began making furniture from live-edge slabs of wood, turning out several benches and frames.

After he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he joined the local Parkinson's support group and then joined the Pedaling for Parkinson's class and was active for six years. He knew that exercise was important for people with Parkinson's. In order to help himself and others, he created a website to share what he had learned about living with Parkinson's and being as active as possible, as long as possible.

Chuck was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Dorothy Melvin, his father William Frank Melvin and his oldest sister Joan Melvin. He is survived by his wife, Marsha, his three children, Suzanne, her three children and five grandchildren, Charles, his six children and Robert and his wife, Paula and their three children and two grandchildren. He is also survived by his three sisters, Louise, Betty and Eileen, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.

In late spring of next year, his ashes will be buried in the family plot in Brown County, Ohio, among generations of Melvin friends and family.
